Who Pays for a Bachelorette Party?

Updated for 2023

A bachelorette party can be a fun occasion. It’s an opportunity to let loose and celebrate your friend and her freedom before she gets married. However, it can be hard for the bride to celebrate anything when she has to worry about the cost. That is why it is so important to figure out who is paying for what before the bachelorette party takes place. This way, everyone can have a good time during the party.

Who’s Responsible for Paying for the Bachelorette Party?

The person in charge of planning the bachelorette party is always the maid of honor. This is because the bride already has enough on her plate planning her actual wedding. Her bachelorette party is supposed to be fun and exciting, a night or weekend that she can let loose and not worry about anything. As the maid of honor, it is your responsibility to make sure that she gets her perfect bachelorette party and that she absolutely doesn’t pay.

First Rule: The Bride Shouldn’t Pay!

The bride never pays for her bachelorette party, the purpose of a bachelorette party is for her to relax and not have to stress about things like planning events. This extends to every aspect of the party. If the party consists of a night out at a bar, the bride will not pay for her drinks. If the party is a weekend at a spa, the bride doesn’t pay for her room, her treatments, her food, etc. However, this does not mean that the maid of honor must cover the expenses of the bride.

How to Decide Who Pays for the Bachelorette Party

In actuality, everyone who is a part of the bridal party chips in. This means that all the bridesmaids will pay at least some part of the bachelorette party. It will be your job as the maid of honor to communicate with everyone and get payment for everything before the party takes place.

That said, financial situations differ and it is not always easy to have an even split between all the bridesmaids. In those cases, it may be a good idea to split the costs in other ways. For example, if the bachelorette party has multiple events, you may have attendees only pay for those events that they are able to attend.

In other cases, there may one who has a lot more money than the other attendees. In this case, they may volunteer to pay for everything and take the financial burden off everyone else. While you cannot force this person to pay for everyone, keeping open communication about the costs of the party with the attendees could compel them to volunteer.

Does the Bride Ever Pay for the Bachelorette Party?

There are rare instances where the bride may have to pay for some aspects of the bachelorette party. For example, if the bachelorette party involves air travel, she may have to pay for her own ticket. This is especially the case if the party is abroad. Other than these select cases, however, the attendees should still expect to cover her smaller expenses such as food and drinks. You may even want to implement a small budget for matching shirts or other fun memorabilia for the party.
